Once the computer booted up, JD inserted his CD and started the game installing.

Ean frowned. “I think a better question is: how can you afford a new computer without a job?”

JD snorted. “Well, I got my medical discharge on account of some experiments that rendered me unfit for active duty. So now the government covers all of my expenses, and in exchange I keep myself out of the media.” He shrugged. “It’s an okay deal, given that I’m stuck with it.”

Ean gaped at him. “You let the government experiment on you?”

JD glanced over at him, his eyes unreadable behind his goggled shades. “Well, yeah,” JD said. “It turns out ‘I love my country T/F’ is right next to ‘I forgo all rights T/F’ on the enrollment papers – and they make you fill those out in pen.
