Book 1, Chapter 94

“What the hell?” JD yelled. Laser blasts rained down around him, forcing him to stay under cover. Meanwhile, Sakura was forced to bob, weave, and duck around a different corner as one of the four aliens attacking JD switched to target her. And Ean, still in the open and trying not to be, was still being ignored. “Are they trying not to hit you?” JD asked him incredulously.

Ean hesitated, then walked up to one of the aliens and flicked it in the helmet. The commando grumbled crossly and shifted to the side – just enough to see around Ean and continue firing at JD.

“I think so,” Ean called back. “Do you think we can use this?”

And then Sakura darted out from cover. She grabbed Ean by the waist and shoulder and swung him in front of herself as she charged through the commandos.

“I am not a shield!” Ean shrieked as she used him to spearhead her charge. She would swing him away just long enough to punch or kick an enemy – and then yank him back, still shrieking a protest no one was paying attention to, in between herself and the other aliens’ pistols.

JD poked his head around the corner to watch. “Damn,” he muttered. “I wish I’d thought of that.”
