“All we were waiting for,” the alien commander interrupted, “is proof that human technology had passed the prerequisite threshold – and to identify a representative of humanity to contrast myself against. We found technological proof in the weapon schematics in your vehicle. And then it was determined that we had a suitable representative for earth in our cells.”

“I see,” Ean muttered. “That’s why none of the soldiers you sent after us targeted me: you needed me left alive to compete against.”

“What?” said Elroy in surprise. “No, they left you alive so the pointy haired one won’t go on an unstoppable killing rampage. He’s the one we want.”
