While Ean was rummaging through his sock drawer, I debated how hard to kick him in the ass.
"What?" Ean asked, startled.
Ah. I had his attention. Good. I was going to answer a question for him, since it had been so long since I’d been asked for ‘out of character’ information.
"Now wait a-" Ean started to protest, but I rolled right over him.
He’d asked what Sakura was pissed about, and the answer was this: She wasn’t pissed, she was hurt. She was a vigorous young woman who’s libido bordered on nymphomania, who’d never been able to express interest in anyone on account of having been raised in seclusion by a clan of ninjas. Anyone back home whom she’d raised an eyebrow at would’ve been murdered in their sleep, and god help anyone who looked at her and was deemed remotely unworthy.
But now, on the first time in her life that she’d been away from the prying eyes of the clan, the first man she’d ever tried flirting with had responded with a "Hell, no."
"Well, okay, maybe I stated myself a little strongly," Ean said. "But-"
But nothing. He was being an ass who’d snapped at her in response to something another girl had done to him long ago. And none of his excuses for not getting involved with someone held water here: or what part of ‘raised by ninjas’ did he not understand?
Sakura’s life was already dangerous and bizarre. Associating with Ean wouldn’t make it stranger. Associating with Ean wouldn’t put her life in more danger than it already was. In fact, the only way associating with him could make her life worse was if he was an ass. Because, really: who likes associating with an ass?
Oh, but wait: Ean had already been a-
"Okay, enough already!" Ean snapped at me. "I’ll apologize for saying no so brusquely. But I’m not going to say yes. I don’t care what you think about my usual ‘excuses,’ I’m not going through that again. So friggin’ stop trying to convince me to try and hook up with every girl I meet!"
And that, I thought, was fair enough. As long as Ean hurried with his apology: Sakura’s conversation with JD had gone poorly, and she was already on her way out of the dorm.
"Shit," Ean yelped – and dashed out of the bedroom in pursuit of Sakura with a speed that proved, despite his protests, that he didn’t want her to disappear from his life after all.
