Gaming didn’t last long. After Necro Neko beat JD’s top three picks, Ean switched to random characters. Pirate Scoundrel, Ghoul King and Sword Princess won the next three rounds, at which point JD threw in the towel.
“That’s it,” JD grumbled. “I’m calling a snack break.”
Ean stood as well. “Actually,” he said, “I’m calling it quits. I have a date to get ready for.”
JD paused halfway to the kitchen and looked back over his shoulder. “Riiight,” he drawled.
“What?” Ean exclaimed defensively. “I do!”
“Sure,” JD said. “And I’m secretly married to a vampire princess, but we’ve agreed to see other people on account of the whole ’til death’ thing having pre-expired.” He snorted. “C’mon, E, if you’re going to make an excuse to quite while I’m kicking your ass, at least make it believable.”
Ean’s eyes narrowed. “JD,” he pointed out dryly, “I’ve won the last six games.”
“Well, yeah,” JD agreed. “So obviously I’m due to start my ass kicking streak next game.” He pointed both hands at Ean and gave him a double thumbs up. “But hey: whatever you’ve got to tell yourself to feel like a winner, right? I’ll be out here when you get back in touch with reality.”
